Past form will probably count for very little when semifinal matches in the Wairarapa Tennis Association's regional one competition are played tomorrow.

Defaults have plagued the premier grade this season and there have also been several games where teams have taken to the court without the services of leading players.

Because of this you can fairly question whether the points achieved in qualifying games are anything like a true indication of the merits of the four sides when they are at full strength.

The semifinals see Masterton playing Martinborough at Masterton and Opaki up against Gladstone at Opaki.

If Masterton have experienced campaigners Luke Atkinson and Chad Parsons they will take a power of beating as they can usually be relied on to win both their singles and doubles matches.

But Martinborough, too, will fancy their chances if Rhona Lovell and Libby Paterson are on hand to give them similar success in the women's singles and doubles.

Opaki and Gladstone did battle in the last of the qualifying round games last weekend with Opaki romping home 8-1 and it is going to take a big effort from Gladstone to turn the tables on this occasion.

In Brett Dymond, Stu Wyeth and Katie Alsop (nee Wyeth), Opaki have formidable players at the top of the order and their collective skills should be enough for them to earn a grand finals berth ... providing they are marked present of course!
