But yesterday his silence spoke volumes. Hide joined several thousand people who marched in Auckland in protest at the Government's Electoral Finance Bill.
Marchers then listened to speeches warning how the bill threatened democracy in New Zealand.
Organisers were delighted with the turnout, saying it showed people were starting to realise the implications of the new legislation.
