A man flashed a handgun at a dairy worker during an attempted robbery in Gisborne's Elgin suburban shopping centre last night and is still on the run.
The armed offenders squad sealed off an area around the Elgin dairy and a police dog handler was brought in to try track the man.
The offender ran off empty-handed.
"Somebody will know who this man is and we want to hear from you," said Senior Sergeant Lincoln Sycamore.
The dairy worker described the man as being around six feet tall, of slim build and in his early 20s. His face was covered but he is believed to be of Maori or Polynesian descent.
