A Nelson man picked the wrong house to attempt to rob last night.
Police say a man armed with an air pistol knocked on the door of a Waimea Rd house at about 10pm.
Senior Constable Phil Wylie says the man demanded money from the resident, who was an off-duty police sergeant and quickly disarmed him.
Mr Wylie says it appears the house was chosen entirely at random.
A 43-year-old Stoke man faces charges of presenting a firearm and attempted aggravated robbery.
