KEY POINTS:
Police have linked the aggravated robbery of a bank in Wellington yesterday to a similar event in Auckland on Monday.
Police yesterday released CCTV images of a man who allegedly robbed a National Bank branch on Lambton Quay at about 3.45pm.
The offender presented a note to a teller saying he had a weapon, but no weapon was seen.
He left the bank, dumped some clothing and a bag and ran up Woodward St towards The Terrace.
Detective Sergeant Glenn Williams said the person in the images looked similar to a man caught on camera robbing an ANZ branch in Manurewa, Auckland, late on Monday morning.
"We believe that when he committed the Wellington robbery the offender was armed with a knife. Members of the public should not approach this man," Mr Williams said.
"He's potentially travelling around the country and may attempt another bank robbery."
The man has been described as Maori or Polynesian, in his 20s, about 182cm tall and of thin to medium build.
He was wearing black wraparound sunglasses, a blue baseball cap with "NY" on the front, an oversized light brown jacket, dark jeans and black sneakers with white laces.
Police wanted to hear from witnesses, including a jogger who may have seen the man dump his bag and clothes.
