KEY POINTS:
A lone gunman escaped with about $75,000 in a daring robbery of two security guards while they were servicing an ATM in central Wellington today.
The robber interrupted the guards outside the National Bank offices on Victoria Street at 7am, ordering them to load the money into his dark blue Mitsubishi Emeraude.
He then got in his car and drove away.
Police describe the man as a male Caucasian in his late 20s. At the time of the hold-up, he was wearing a beanie and dark clothing, Detective Inspector Mike Arnerich said.
He had been waiting in his car for the security guards to arrive. His car bore the registration plate WZ6059.
"Our strongest lead at this time is to find that car. If anybody looks out their window and sees it parked on their street, I urge them to ring police immediately," Mr Arnerich said.
"This is a busy street at this time of the morning, and is overlooked by hundreds of offices. We would like anybody who saw the car waiting outside the ATM or the actual robbery to contact us."
Witnesses can contact the Wellington police on (04) 381 2000.
