KEY POINTS:
A bank teller was left hysterical by a robbery in central Christchurch.
It took bank staff five minutes to calm the woman down so they could find out what had happened, police prosecutor Sergeant Ash Tabb told Christchurch District Court today.
Stephen Matthew Glover, an unemployed 20-year-old of no fixed address, today pleaded guilty to a charge of robbing the woman.
Judge Philip Moran remanded him in custody for a sentencing on October 19.
Defence counsel Glen Henderson said a psychiatric assessment would continue during the remand and may provide valuable information for the court.
Mr Tabb said Glover went to the Westpac Bank in Cashel Street at 1.02pm on August 17.
He approached a woman teller and gave her a handwritten note reading: "Give me the money. I have a gun."
The teller handed over $300 and Glover left the bank. Bank staff then had to calm her down before they could find out that there had been a robbery.
Police issued very clear security photos of Glover at the bank counter soon after the robbery.
He had a hood up, but his face was visible.
They announced only five hours after the robbery that they had arrested him.
He told the police he had not actually had a gun.
