KEY POINTS:
A road worker was lucky to escape serious injury when he was hit by a car at Chertsey, 19km northeast of Ashburton, this morning.
Police southern communications centre spokesman Sergeant Lindsay Turner said the incident happened just after 7am at road works on State Highway 1.
The man received minor injuries and was treated by St John paramedics before being taken to Ashburton Hospital for a check-up.
"I don't think it was too serious," Mr Turner said. "He's a bit lucky."
Police are investigating.
