A Waikato road worker was so concerned about motorists speeding through a construction site that he called police just half an hour before he was hit by a car.
The 49-year-old Traffic Management New Zealand worker suffered serious head, hip and leg injuries after he was struck from behind by a vehicle on State Highway 39 between Ngaruawahia and Otorohanga, about 9pm on Friday.
The driver didn't stop and the last thing the roadworker remembered was spinning through the air, reported The Waikato Times.
After being knocked unconscious, the man came to and managed to crawl to the roadside to wave down help, before suffering a seizure.
Police are seeking the driver, whose car was likely to have received damage to its left front side.
A New Zealand Transport Association Waikato roading spokeswoman said the worker remained in hospital and was expected to be there for some time.
