Road spikes were used to end a lengthy police chase along Auckland's Southern Motorway early today.
The chase started about 2am when police tried to stop the vehicle near the Ellerslie off-ramp due to the driver appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
A police spokesman said the driver refused to stop and headed north, despite police driving alongside his vehicle and gesturing for him to stop.
"Due to danger to the public, the offending vehicle was followed at a distance," the spokesman said.
"Each time the offender saw police behind him, he increased his speed. The vehicle eventually stopped on the northern side of Warkworth after driving across two sets of road spikes."
The man will face a number of charges after refusing breath alcohol procedures.
