Nelson police had to use two sets of road spikes to stop a group of three who fled a routine police roadside stop today.
Police stopped a Subaru being driven by a suspended driver on Rocks Road in Nelson about midday, Sergeant Wade Jennings said.
As police were talking to him beside the police car, a passenger in the Subaru got into the driver's seat and drove off.
Police pursued the car but had to abandon the chase, he said. When the car reappeared shortly afterwards a second pursuit started.
Two separate sets of road spikes were set up but the driver got through the first set and drove onto the grass verge to avoid the second set.
Police abandoned the pursuit, but not long after that the car stopped and the driver and two passengers took off on foot.
They were caught about 1pm.
The driver has been charged with driving while disqualified, reckless driving, dangerous driving, failing to stop and drink driving.
The owner of the car has been charged with driving while suspended.
