KEY POINTS:
State Highway 2 between Paeroa and Waihi has reopened after a fatal crash in the Karangahake Gorge this morning.
Initial indications were the crash occurred when a Waihi bound car lost control on a left hand bend and crossed into the path of a Paeroa bound utility vehicle about 7.30am.
A Westpac rescue helicopter flew to the scene but the 17-year-old male driver of the car died of his injuries at the scene.
His name has not yet been released.
Another person with a minor injuries was being treated by St John Ambulance staff.
The Waikato Serious Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
Police at the scene said there was a very heavy build up of traffic and asked drivers to be patient.
