KEY POINTS:
A truck carrying an oxidising chemical has rolled on a central North Highland highway raising concerns about a Whio or Blue Duck colony.
The Department of Conservation contacted the council after the truck rolled on State Highway 4 near Makatoke and spilled peroxide, just before 1am today.
But Horizons Regional Council spokesman Shane Bayley said the ducks were in no danger because the chemicals didn't get into any waterways.
Mr Bayley said the response was good and the chemical - in a granule form - was cleaned up.
The road was closed all morning but has now been reopened.
A bridge was damaged in the accident and diversions are in place through State Highways 47 and 49.
Inspector Ken Climo said the driver of the truck suffered minor injuries in the crash.
A 50 tonne crane was called to remove the truck.
It appeared no other vehicles were involved.
