KEY POINTS:
The weekend road toll climbed to four early today when a person died after a car hit a power pole.
Inspector Michael Coleman, of police central communications, said the accident happened about 4.50am in Brookfields Road, Hastings.
The person who died was thrown from the vehicle and another occupant was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Yesterday two other died in the early hours of the morning after their car ran off the road and hit a fence in West Otago.
Senior Sergeant Dave Raynes said the crash happened between 3am and 6am on State Highway 90, between Crookston and Edievale.
Also in the South Island, a 17-year-old woman died after being hit by a car on State Highway 1 near Blenheim yesterday.
Detective Mike Lawson said the woman, who had been drinking, got out of a car at Grovetown, 4km north of Blenheim, and walked on to the road about 1.15am. She was then hit by the car.
The woman was rushed to Blenheim's Wairau Hospital but died soon after. The car driver was treated for minor injuries.
