Police warn that participants in Steal A Road Cone Day, organised on Facebook for today, could face charges resulting in three months' prison or a fine up to $3000.
The event, which had 7000 people confirmed as attending, encourages people to "steal as many road cones as you can!"
But Superintendent Kelvin Powell has called the event a stupid prank, as cones are a safety measure to warn the public about road works and obstructions.
