Lower North Island residents can expect to hear Royal New Zealand Air Force Iroquois helicopters and an Orion overhead over the next few nights as part of night flying exercises.
Exercise Pekapeka - the Maori name for a native New Zealand bat - is designed to train the aircrew in night vision goggle operations and maintenance personnel in aircraft maintenance at night, the New Zealand Defence Force said today.
The crews will be flying their night missions in the lower North Island until May 1.
