A Royal New Zealand Air Force aircraft has completed a high-risk mission to evacuate an injured person from Antarctica.
The C-130 Hercules, with 13 crew on board, including two Defence Force medical personnel, left Christchurch late last night, bound for McMurdo Station.
They landed back in Christchurch this afternoon.
In winter, it is dark in Antarctica 24 hours a day, so the crew used night-vision goggles to land the aircraft in the dark on the ice runway.
