An attempt by a couple in the lower North Island to wash their four-wheel-drive vehicle in the Rangitikei River has backfired.
The owners drove the vehicle along the edge of the water but it became swamped and police arrived to find the couple standing on the car's roof.
A local rescue crew and the Air Force had to rescue them. Early this morning the vehicle was still in the water.
