KEY POINTS:
The Rimutaka Hill Road between Wellington and Wairarapa re-opened late this morning.
The road, State Highway 2, closed when snow fell last night, and remained closed this morning due to icy conditions.
Sergeant Mark Oliver, of police central communications, said roading contractors had laid grit in various places, but motorists were still advised proceed with caution due to the presence of patches of ice.
The contractors would remain in the area for some time to monitor the road condition.
Around Dunedin police were attending a number of vehicle crashes in the area due to a heavy frost overnight.
Roads were very icy in and around Dunedin, particularly sheltered areas in the city, as well as north out of Dunedin on State Highway One, and along Portobello Road from Vauxhall to Portobello on the Otago Peninsula.
Snow also fell on the Desert Road in the central North Island overnight, but it remained open this morning.
