Rimutaka Hill closed after snowfall

The Rimutaka Hill Road from Wellington to the Wairarapa remained closed today due to ice.

The road, State Highway 2, closed when snow fell last night.

It had been closed yesterday morning, but re-opened at 1pm.

Sergeant Bruce Mackay said last night when the road closed that motorists had been struggling with the dangerous surface and were being escorted down the hill by road works staff.

"Also, a truck and trailer has jack-knifed causing further issues," Mr Mackay said.

Snow also fell on the Desert Road overnight, but it remained open this morning.
