Rifle pointed at police

Two people are in custody in Hamilton after a rifle was pointed at police who tried to stop a car.

The vehicle was pulled over in Hamilton City for a routine stop on a traffic offence.

Police say the weapon was pointed at officers as they approached the car, which then sped off.

The gun was presented two more times during the ensuing pursuit.

Eventually the car lost control and crashed into a ditch at Rototuna.

One of the occupants was arrested there, but the other made a run for it and was tracked down by a police dog team.
