KEY POINTS:
Skiing on Mt Ruapehu has returned to normal with all restrictions lifted after last week's surprise eruption, which produced two lahars and blew rocks and hot water on to a nearby hut, seriously injuring an Auckland climber.
Scientists from GNS and the Department of Conservation confirmed today volcanic activity on the mountain had settled back to the levels that were present before last Tuesday's blast.
All involved parties were now comfortable the risk of further eruptions and lahar activity had reduced to levels which will allow all trails and lifts at Whakapapa to reopen.
Lift operator Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (RAL) said the Far West T-Bar at Whakapapa would continue operating as soon as the weather cleared.
RAL general manager Dave Mazey said this was great news as the mountain received more than 30cm of fresh snow over the past two days, and more snow was in the forecast.
