Six Auckland resthome residents were taken to hospital after a fire broke out in one of the lounges at midnight.
Fire Service spokesman Phil Norris said the fire alarm at Aranui Rest Home and Hospital sounded at midnight and 10 fire trucks were sent to the Mt Albert address.
Mr Norris said five of the elderly residents were taken to hospital because of smoke inhalation and another with cuts.
"Shortly after we arrived they detected a fire in a room and heavy smoke logging in one of the wings.
"And then there were reports of people still within the building."
The fire was quickly brought under control. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
