KEY POINTS:
The corner of an upmarket Ponsonby street has been turned into a rubbish site, and residents are not happy.
Cardboard litter has been gathering on the corner of Collingwood St and Ponsonby Rd for more than four weeks, and this has attracted others to throw more rubbish and beer bottles on the pile.
Resident Graham Fox said he had made numerous calls to the Auckland City Council, recycling company Paper Chase and even the Fire Brigade - but no one, it seems, wants to remove the litter.
He said he knew of at least two other neighbours who had made the same phone calls.
"Calling the Fire Brigade shows how desperate we have become, but we don't know what else to do when no one wants to take responsibility or do anything," Mr Fox said.
"Looking at the pile of rubbish, it looks as if it was something that would happen in a Third World country, not Auckland, and definitely not Ponsonby." He said rats had "taken up residence under the pile" and the concern at it being a fire hazard was very real, because "similar piles have been set alight in the past by late night revellers".
An Auckland City Council spokesman said the council would look into the matter today.
