KEY POINTS:
Residents who will lose their homes if a proposed arterial road in Manukau is built want the local council to find another route.
Up to 70 homes around Redoubt Rd and nearby Mill Rd would be bulldozed to make way for the Manukau City Council's proposed Flat Bush to Drury arterial road.
John and Valerie Martin have lived at their Redoubt Rd home, where they raised their two children, for 37 years.
Mr Martin says like many of his neighbours, he is upset about the project.
Options for the arterial road - expected to cost about $100 million - include widening Redoubt Rd, turning it into a four-lane highway.
Another option would shift an 800m section of Mill Rd, and the third would form a new road opposite the nearby reservoirs which would head south to meet Mill Rd.
"If they choose that option, the road will go straight through our house. A proportion of the neighbour's house will be gone too," Mr Martin said.
Residents would be affected whatever option was selected, and the proposal was disheartening for them.
"There's a guy who only moved in last month. He's only been mowing the lawns for the first time and now this - he's pretty upset."
About 200 residents this week attended a consultation meeting held in Manukau, at which members of the city council, road consultants and geologists presented their plans.
One resident presented the meeting with an alternative plan, under which an arterial road would skirt around all the main roads in the proposed options, including Redoubt Rd, Mill Rd and Murphys Rd - and would not cut into any residents' homes.
Pakuranga ward councillor David Collings told residents that every option was being looked at carefully.
"We're looking at cost, safety and the impact on the community - the reality is, we're going to look at the cheaper options."
