A Waikato University lecturer says society needs to take some of the blame for some of the world's disasters like the BP oil spill and Pike River.
Dr Heather Connolly, alongside her father Dr John Bircham, have completed a study which looked at a range of accidents and disasters to find out how the organisations were being run before the accident or crisis.
Dr Connolly says they expected to find leadership responsible for the failures, but she says as they furthered their study they found that society plays a large part in many disasters.
She says as consumers we are constantly demanding more from business but want to pay less.
She says this means businesses are trapped in a cycle of profit and production, and there are real and serious consequences.
