A team of rescuers and a police dog have battled blustery winds, snow and ice to save an Australian couple from spending a night in freezing conditions in the central North Island.
Senior Constable, Barry Shepherd says the pair, in their 20s, had set out hiking in the Kaimanawa Ranges, heading over Umukarikari on Saturday morning before spending a night at Waipakahi River on Saturday night.
On Sunday they took a wrong turn and were forced to spend the night in a makeshift shelter in the bush high above the swollen river.
The couple retraced their steps on Monday morning, but still could not find their way to the road so made the decision to call the police at 9:30am.
After cellphone contact was lost police made the call to bring in the search team and a police dog and its handler to help find the hikers.
