A man was flown with chest injuries to Palmerston North Hospital after losing control of his car and hitting a roadside tree near Pongaroa.
Lance Burns, pilot of the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter, said the rescue aircraft was called to the scene of the crash south of Pongaroa on Route 52 about 7.30am yesterday. He said the driver, aged in his 50s, had lost control of his vehicle, which ran off the road and down a bank before striking a tree.
The man received chest injures in the incident and St John paramedics treated him at the scene before he was airlifted to Palmerston North Hospital in a stable condition. An Eketahuna volunteer fire crew also scrambled to the crash scene.
