The condition of a seriously ill crewman on a yacht competing in the Global Challenge race is being monitored by Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ).
New Zealander John Masters fell ill on board the yacht Imagine it Done, 900 nautical miles east of the Chatham Islands, on its way to Wellington.
A mayday call was received about 10pm last night after concerns over Mr Masters' condition.
The centre said in a statement today Imagine it Done had received medical supplies from another race competitor, Save the Children, and was also receiving medical advice from the British-based fleet medical officer.
Present medical advice was that the crewman was stable and the best option was for Imagine it Done to head for the Chathams, which the crew expects to reach in about three days.
RCCNZ would monitor the situation in case any further help was needed.
The yachts are heading for Wellington from South America and not expected until early next month.
