Police are hunting a man who apparently waved a gun at a group of Lower Hutt school children this morning.
A group of students were playing in the Pukeatua School grounds in Wainuiomata when they saw a man in the distance waving what appeared to be a firearm, Senior Sergeant Steve Braybrook of Lower Hutt police said.
"Schools in the local area have been advised of this incident and we have a large number of police staff currently in Wainuiomata looking for this person,'' he said.
The man had been walking on the Black Creek bridge near the school when the incident occurred about 11.25am.
He headed off in the direction of Norfolk St but there have been no sightings since.
Mr Braybrook said the man was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with patterns on both sleeves.
