A total solar eclipse blocked out the sun for many New Zealanders today.
Viewers packed out grounds around the Auckland Observatory and took to the streets around the country to witness the rare event, in which the moon passed in front of the sun.
Northlanders apparently had the best view when the moon reached "maximum coverage" of 89 per cent of the sun at 10.25am in Whangarei.
