Masterton Bowling Club officials are optimistic their No.1 green will be ready for play by November.
Renovation work on the green has seen it uplifted and it will be sown out in Maniototo weed.
Greenkeeper at Palmerston North's Northern club, Micheal Hearsey, has been the consultant for an operation which should not only speed up the playing surface but make it easier to maintain.
"There were two or three different varieties of weed in the green before and that meant the speed of the surface could vary from one rink to the other," supervisor Dennis Richards said. "By having just the one weed the speed should be the same all over the green, and it will also take less cutting."
The Masterton club is over 100 years old and this is the first time renovation work of such magnitude has been undertaken on either of their two greens.
Wairarapa's oldest bowling club though is Carterton and they had their annual meeting last Sunday.
President Evelyn Rolls presented her report and a pleasing financial situation means there will be no increase in fees for this coming season. Finances should also be helped by expected developments in evening bowls and croquet and housie continues to be a popular attraction.
The club's advertising programme has also been a big success with advertisers more than happy with the very visable boards they have around the greens.
Stepping down after serving five years as Carterton's patron is Gordon Stubbs and thanks was given to him for the many years of dedicated service he has given the club. The new patron is Joan Butcher while Evelyn Rolls retains the presidency and Robin Boutcher and Dale Anderson are again vice-presidents and Wairarapa centre delegates.
Returning as treasurer is Mike Lander and Carol Voller is secretary. Greens superintendants are the two Jims, Daysh and Laing, with June Neilson in charge of catering and Len Eplett chairing the match committee.
Congratulations were extended to all club champions with special mention being made of the effort of Brian Schischka in winning his centre gold star. Two new members, Roy and Stella Smith, were welcomed.
Opening day for the Carterton club will be September 24 but before that there will be a fund raising day on August 8 and an all day garage sale on September 3.
