Even if local importer Motorcorp's wildest dreams come true and the recently relaunched Renault brand takes the Kiwi market by storm, RenaultSport models such as the Megane RS 250 will only ever play a niche role.
But they do have an important part to play in re-establishing Renault in New Zealand, says general manager Steve Kenchington. "The RenaultSport models help 'hero' the brand for us. Performance has always been a real attribute for Renault and gives us credibility. We're bringing in a Formula One replica for Speedshow this year [July 23-24, ASB Showgrounds] and that will help 'hero' the RS 250 some more.
"I'm not saying we want to try to live off that motorsport image in the marketing for our mainstream models. But most of the buying public are aware of Renault's motorsport credentials and hopefully that will translate into a few retail sales."
Kenchington reckons the RS 250 has more driver appeal than the Megane R26 it replaces.
"If you look at this new car, it's stunning from any angle and will appeal to a wide audience.
"What I like about the RS 250 is that you can drive it sedately and it's very comfortable. It's only when you put the pedal down that you realise just how good it is."
Motorcorp aims to sell around 20 Megane RS 250 models by December. It doesn't sound like a lot - until you consider that Renault sold just 14 cars in total in New Zealand for 2010.
The RS 250 is expected to account for less than 10 per cent of the marque's local sales, so this niche model also illustrates the scale of the brand's renewed ambition for 2011.
