The Council of Trade Unions wants New Zealanders to spare a thought for the thousands of people working Christmas Day who are now rewarded for their efforts under new employment laws.
CTU secretary Carol Beaumont said in the past many people worked public holidays for little or no extra pay, and often against their will.
"There is a need to ensure that employees are able to get balance into their lives, both for their benefit, and for the good of their families and communities."
The Holidays Act required people working any of New Zealand's public holidays to be paid time-and-a-half plus a day in lieu, she said.
