A man who allegedly set fire to a car in a central Wellington pedestrian mall on election day remains in custody.
Christopher Palenski, 40, appeared before Judge Anne Gaskell in Wellington District Court today on two charges of threatening to kill and one of arson.
He allegedly drove his car into Cuba Mall on November 26 and set it alight, startling shoppers when the windows blew out. No one was injured, and the incident was caught on video.
He said in court today that his life was in danger in custody but Judge Gaskell said his lawyer, Janine Bonifant, would need to speak to prison staff about his concerns.
She remanded him in custody to reappear on January 19.
