Prime Minister John Key and Transport Minister Stephen Joyce attend to the official part of the ceremony. Thousands of pedestrians walked over the new Kopu Bridge at an official opening ceremony - but there is still no firm date on when the $40 million structure will be open for traffic.
The Transport Agency was hoping the first cars could be allowed across the two-lane bridge over the Waihou River and approach roads today.
But it is reluctant to commit its contractors to a set date next week for tying it into State Highway 25.
Prime Minister John Key and Transport Minister Steven Joyce cut the ribbon at a ceremony on Saturday, when Mr Joyce said Coromandel was one of the country's fastest growing holiday spots, with 2.5 million visitors this year.
The previous Kopu Bridge, a one-lane structure, served the region for 84 years but was a bottle-neck for traffic queues during the peak summer holidays.
