Cross-country
Wairarapa runners performed with credit at the Wellington regional cross-country championships held at Waikanae on Saturday, with the individual highlight being the effort of Tony Price to come third in the men's 50yrs grade.
Price, the national marathon champion in his age group, was part of a quality field, including eventual winner Vaughan New of Wellington Harriers. Price ran well but had to settle for third, his time of 33min 12s for the 8km being about 30s slower than New's.
Ben Winder wore the Athletics and Cycling Masterton colours in the senior men's race over a 12km course. Winder was competitive enough to earn a top-10 placing, finishing ninth in 45.19.
The men's 40yrs event saw Masterton's Ray Haste continue his strong form by placing 27th in a respectable 40.44 for the 8km. Lloyd Millar was the sole competitor for ACM in the men's 60yrs grade and he finished sixth in 41.07 for the 8km. Veteran Masterton athlete Ray Wallis, competing for the Aurora club, also ran in the 60yrs grade and came home 18th in 53.07.
