Wairarapa senior men's cricket selector Mark Brown is in the process of settling on the composition of two teams which will play a 60-over trial match on October 31.
And he says form shown there will play a big part in who makes his squad to prepare for the first of the Hawke Cup elimination matches against Manawatu in Palmerston North on November 20 and 21.
"It won't be just another game of cricket. It could mean the difference between some players getting the nod and some missing out," Brown said of the trial match which could have to be played on an artificial surface because none of the grass wickets in the region are available for play.
"Obviously we are keen to get on the grass but right now, it doesn't seem likely."
Brown has been pleased with the early-season performances of many of the leading candidates for rep selection over the first two rounds of club matches and aims to distribute them equally through the two trial sides.
"The idea is to come up with two teams which are as even in strength as they can possibly be," he said. "We want a close, hard-fought match which tests the ability of players to react to pressure situations."
