Herald readers are backing Women's Refuge head Merepeka Raukawa-Tait and sportsmen Rob Waddell and David Tua as their top New Zealanders.
For the past week, the Herald has been asking for nominations for the titles of Man and Woman of the Year.
After more than 300 nominations have arrived, Merepeka Raukawa-Tait leads the charge, and the next highest contender, perhaps surprisingly, is Christine Rankin, the controversial chief executive of Work and Income New Zealand.
But almost all Ms Rankin's votes come from people who work for her. A fair proportion also originate from the Winz public relations firm, Network Communications.
Sports heroes are very popular: Olympic oarsman Rob Waddell and boxer David Tua are attracting big support for Man of the Year.
David Clarke, chief executive of South Auckland Health, and Lord of the Rings film-maker Peter Jackson are other list toppers.
In Mr Clarke's case, once again a suspicious number of votes carry the e-mail address of Middlemore Hospital, where he is the boss.
