The associate referee courses to be held by the Wairarapa-Bush Rugby Referees Association at Greytown on May 27 and Masterton on June 3 are not a closed shop.
Clubs have officially been asked to send at least two representatives to the courses which have been called because of a shortage of registered referees, but WBRRA secretary Peter Debney said yesterday they were open to anyone interested in helping out.
A qualified associate referee is able to referee any game of rugby with the proviso they must apply Domestic Safety Law Variations for all scrummages (maximum 1.5m push, 45 per cent wheeling, halfback offside line is middle of the scrum, etc).
Accreditation for associate referees lasts for four seasons with the stipulation the individual must attend a Rugby Smart course each of those four years.
The Greytown and Masterton workshops will involve a Rugby Smart presentation from 6pm to 6.30pm followed by the associate referee course, which will run from 6.30pm to 8pm.
