Red Star scored a 5-0 win over Featherston in the final of the Wairarapa Hockey Association's men's division one competition at Clareville on Saturday.
It was late in the first half that Red Star netted the opening goal and after they had added two further goals in the second spell Featherston elected to remove their goalkeeper with the idea of adding an extra player to their attack. That also had the effect, however, of weakening their defence and Red Star capitalised by adding two more goals to their tally.
The final of the women's A competition saw Dalefield race out to a 2-0 lead over Red Star within the first 10 minutes but Red Star got one back before the break. The only goal of the second half came from Dalefield's Sharon Belcher and try as they might Red Star could not reduce the 3-0 margin.
The women's B final between Tui Old Girls and Tumu was a cracker with Tui Old Girls taking a 2-0 lead and Tumu levelling things up at 2-2 by the end of ordinary time.
The first five minutes of extra time were played with each team fielding only nine players and when no goal was scored the playing numbers were reduced to seven apiece. It was then that one of the "young guns" in the Tui Old Girls line-up, Emma Smith, netted the goal which gave them the title.
