Red Star cruised to an eight-wicket win over Greytown in the final of the Wairarapa Cricket Association's Umpires Cup limited-overs cricket competition, played at Queen Elizabeth Park Oval in Masterton yesterday.
It was the second successive year the two teams had met in the competition decider and the second time Red Star had emerged with the honours.
Greytown batted first and with only three of their players getting into double figures - four if you count Mr Extras - they were always behind the eight ball, being all out for a paltry 102.
The key wicket for Red Star was obviously that of the experienced Mark Childs who had scored a brilliant 152 for Greytown in their semi-final win over Wairarapa College on Saturday , a feat made even more remarkable by the fact he had notched 158 against Academy the previous weekend.
It wouldn't have been the first time successive centuries have been scored by the one player in senior cricket in Wairarapa but successive 150's&well;, that could be a different story.
Yesterday, however, Childs fell to the bowling of Willie Thompson for just five, one of four wickets Thompson took during the Greytown innings He finished with 4-36 from his 10 overs while spinner Brad Edwards captured 4-22, also from 10 overs.
Opener Dean Southey top scored for Greytown with 31, including four fours, and next highest contributors were Duncan Didsbury and Ewan Burt, both of whom made 15.
Red Star were typically assertive in reaching their victory target, taking only 17.3 overs to make 105-2.
Edwards hit six fours and three singles in his 27, fellow opener Daniel Stoneley three fours in his 19 and Troy Burling six fours in his unbeaten 34. Bowling for Greytown Burt took 1-9 from three overs and Seth Rance 1-39 from six overs.
