Red Star skipper Shay O'Gorman is quite prepared to accept the underdog tag for his side leading into their Wairarapa Cricket Association Bidwell Cup grand final match against Greytown at Queen Elizabeth Park oval in Masterton this coming weekend.
O'Gorman readily concedes that, on paper at least, the southerners have more depth in their batting and at least equal strength in their bowling, and that in talented youngster Seth Rance they have one player capable of dominating the action with bat and ball.
But that doesn't mean he has written off any chance of Red Star upsetting the odds?not by a long chalk.
"Out strength is that we play as a team, that we work on the basis that everyone has to pull together for the good of the side," he said. "We don't have too many stars but as a unit we can measure up to anyone."
O'Gorman says Red Star will be adopting tactics aimed at combating the Rance factor.
The medium pacer is the leading wicket taker in Wairarapa this season at both club and rep level and has been just as effective with the bat, having registered one hundred and five 50;s.
"You can't ignore the fact that he (Rance) is potentially a match winner and we've been discussing how best to handle him," he said. "If we can restrict his influence then obviously we'll be doing ourselves a big favour."
Interestingly enough no Red Star batsman has managed to bring up three figures this season but there have been hints that players like current Wairarapa reps Daniel Stonely and Joe Hull, plus the two Burlings, Troy and Corey, have the potential to do so.
Nobody can question the depth of Red Star in the bowling department though with O'Gorman able to call on at least seven players there?medium pacers Carwyn Caffell, Jarrod Watt, Peter Sigvertsen, and Willie Thomson and spinners Aaron Wilson, Kyle Williamson and O'Gorman himself.
It's an attack which doesn't have anyone of Rance's pace but it is big on accuracy and O'Gorman says that could be the key to them keeping the strong Greytown batting order under wraps.
"We have a number of bowlers who can maintain good line and length over a decent period, and they don't panic when the opposition looks to go after them,' he said.
Having three spinners, especially, could be a real bonus for Red Star if the wicket starts to wear on the second day.
"If there is any turn there we should be able to exploit it?hopefully we get the chance to do that," O"Gorman said.
