A Manurewa recycling company has been ordered to pay $90,000 over an incident in which an employee's arm was crushed in a baling machine.
General Recycle Limited was charged under the Health and Safety in Employment Act.
In Manukau District Court the company was fined $40,000 and ordered to pay reparation of $50,000.
The incident took place on November 26 last year when an employee was operating a machine that compressed plastic or metal for recycling.
After noticing an item of a different grade of plastic, the worker tried to retrieve it from the machine but caught his sleeve, which led to his arm being crushed, said the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
