Rigg-Zschokke Building Contract Limited's David Hargood sits in front of the new mural "Wairarapa" on Lincoln Street, which was designed by a mystery artist from Palmerston North.

The mural shows the Wairarapa landscape touching the blue sky on the left and the Wairarapa coastal sea eroding the beach and land on the right.

"I think its cool and reflects Masterton," Mr Hargood said.

The mural, commissioned by the Masterton Lands Trust, cost next to nothing as it used recycled materials.

"Part of the brief was about being green, and sustainability, and to this end we have reused the roofing cladding from the old Saint Patrick's School block that was demolished last year, the paint was also donated by Resene."

The mural is located where the old 1903 Wairarapa Age building once stood, which Rigg-zschokke removed around two weeks ago.

Mr Hargood is pictured with the book Fortuitous Lagacy: The Masterton Trust Landstrust 1872 - 1997, which has the history of buildings in Masterton, including the old Wairarapa Age building.PHOTO/]LYNDA FERINGA
