The Herald on Sunday has recorded the biggest readership increase of any New Zealand newspaper - and its lead over the opposition in Auckland is now at record level.
Overall readership increased by 13,000 to 380,000 in the 12 months to September 30, 2009 - a 3.5 per cent increase on the previous 12 months. Readership was also up from the previous three months.
In Auckland, the Herald on Sunday has 220,000 readers - 44,000 more readers than the Sunday Star-Times and double the Sunday News' readership.
Nielsen Media Research described the Star-Times' loss of 13,000 readers in Auckland over 12 months, as "significant".
The Herald on Sunday also has a huge lead over its rivals in the northern half of the North Island (north of Taupo) - its main distribution area. Herald on Sunday editor Shayne Currie said the results reflected the success of the newspaper's new content and design.
