A record number of New Zealanders have received influenza vaccinations this year.
The Government-subsidised influenza vaccine campaign ended on June 30 with a total of 761,180 doses distributed, a six per cent increase on 2005.
"This is a great improvement on previous years and it means many more New Zealanders will avoid the misery of this serious disease and its complications," National Influenza Strategy Group (NISG1) spokesman Dr Lance Jennings said.
Dr Jennings said hat although the Government-subsidised scheme had ended for 2006 individuals, especially those at high-risk from influenza complications, could still be immunised.
"It is early enough in the influenza season to get the best protection from the vaccine against influenza, although now they will have to pay."
Pharmac, the Government's drug-buying agency which arranges the supply of influenza vaccines each year, is also delighted with the result.
Medical director Dr Peter Moodie said historically there had been a 2-3 per cent increase year on year.
