KEY POINTS:
At first, Jack Price thought it was just "another bloody stingray" tangled in his net.
But when he saw its yellow belly, he not only realised it was a flounder but perhaps a record catch in his 14 years targeting the species.
Mr Price caught the 51.4cm, 1.4kg fish at Titahi, Portland Estuary.
"It was the biggest I've ever caught or heard of in the Whangarei Harbour," he said. "The biggest I had heard of before was 50cm. "
"Hucky the flounder man", as he is known, is a commercial fisherman, specialising in flounder, and runs the Caltex Service Station in Oakleigh.
His latest catch also beat his father's record catch which stood at 46.8cm.
An average flounder measures 35cm and usually comes to the Whangarei Harbour for feeding.
