Record entries are already guaranteed for the Go 4 Your Life women's triathlon to be held in Masterton on Sunday, starting at 8.30am.
Ninety five individuals and 30 teams of three have already indicated they will be taking part in the event, figures which Dayle Clarkson, regional sports manager for Sport Wellington-Wairarapa, said are well above those of previous years. And those numbers are expected to grow significantly when late entries are taken from 7.30am on race day.
Clarkson said factors such as a strong advertising campaign and favourable weather for training purposes were probably among the main reasons for the increased interest in an event which is centred around the Queen Elizabeth Park area and involves a 2.3km run or walk, a 13km cycle ride and a 175m swim in the Genesis Recreation Centre pool.
"I think too that more and more women are becoming aware of the advantages of keeping themselves fit and the triathlon provides them with something to aim for in that respect," she said.
Clarkson also noted that while the faster participants are likely to complete the full event in about 45 minutes, the emphasis was on participation rather than results and consequently only spot prizes would be up for grabs.
"Just making it to the finish is a success," she said.
