The Australasian New Car Assessment Programme has released a record number of five-star crash test safety ratings. Many of the five-star cars tested are on sale in New Zealand, including the Holden Commodore and Statesman, the Toyota Aurion, Subaru Outback and Legacy, Alfa Mito, Peugeot 308CC coupe-cabriolet, Mercedes Viano - and even a commercial van, the Mercedes Vito, as long as the optional side curtain airbags are fitted.
Five-star ratings are no longer a rarity, with even the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius hybrids snaring the top score during Euro NCAP tests, which also saw five stars achieved by the latest Kia Sorento SUV.
Citroen's C3 missed its five-star rating, though it received some points for its speed limiter system.

Skoda's new Yeti scored 92 per cent for frontal impact but VW's Polo protected children better, and Toyota's Prius scored highest for pedestrian protection.
Renault's Grand Scenic received a 99 per cent for safety assist, which can make the difference between a coveted five stars and less.
